愛爾蘭的發明家 William Painter 在 1892 年發明了第一個瓶蓋。

Irish inventor William Painter invented the first bottle cap in 1892.

這第一批的瓶蓋上有 24 個鋸齒——直到 1930 年代為止，瓶子都是搭配這種瓶蓋使用。

The first caps had 24 teeth, and bottles used them until the 1930s.

然而，這種蓋子封得太緊了，因而讓開瓶變得危險。

However, the caps were too tight. That made bottles dangerous to open.

但鋸齒減少的話，液體可能會漏出瓶子，而且可能讓空氣跑進去。

With fewer teeth, however, liquid might leak out of the bottle. Also, air might get in.

製作玻璃瓶的公司用不同的瓶蓋做了一些測試：21 個鋸齒的瓶蓋效果最好，且在開瓶時是最安全的。

Bottle companies did some tests with different caps. Bottle caps with 21 teeth worked best and were the safest to open.
