外表單數內在複數的「集合名詞」，如何使用？
集合名詞是一群人或生物的集合體。常見的集合名詞有 family、class、audience、staff、cattle、police、jury（陪審團）等。這些名詞雖然外觀呈現單數，實際上的數量卻是複數。在不同語境中，可將同一集合名詞分別視作一個「整體」或「個體」，並由此判斷須搭配單數或複數動詞：
① 將集合名詞視為一個不可分割的「整體」時，此時做單數使用，要搭配單數動詞。
The jury has been discussing this court case for hours.
陪審團已經討論這個訴訟案件好幾個小時了。
My family wants to take a short vacation this summer.
我們家想在今年夏天來場短期度假。
② 將集合名詞視為一群成員時，強調的是許多「個體」，，作為複數使用，就要搭配複數動詞。
The jury couldn't make up their minds about whether the woman was innocent.
陪審團的成員們無法判定這名女子是否無罪。
My family often get together during Chinese New Year.
我的家人們通常會在農曆過年期間聚在一起。
！ 單數形但意義永遠為複數的集合名詞
這類集合名詞包括cattle（牛群）、police（警察）等。也就是說，當我們使用 cattle 就是指一群牛，不能說「一隻牛」。使用 police 時就代表一群警察，要表示「一名警察」則應使用「a police officer」。
The cattle are milked on the farm.
那群牛正在農場上被擠奶。
The police are preventing anyone from entering the crime scene.
警方在阻止任何人進入犯罪現場。
