相似字「remain」和「maintain」的用法比較
今天要來介紹兩個長得很像、字義也差不多的兩個單字「remain」與「maintain」，兩者都有「保持；維持」的意思，然而使用時機與用法並不相同，以下比較說明：
① remain 為不及物動詞，有「仍然…；還是…」之意，多指「某物保持在某狀態」，後方須接主詞補語（地點/不定詞/形容詞/現在或過去分詞等）以使句意完整：
I remained in the school after all the students had left.（+地點）
學生們都離開學校之後，我還留在校園裡。
The question remains to be answered by the scholars.（+不定詞）
這個問題有待學者們提出回答。
The man remained silent when the police questioned him.（+形容詞，描述主詞維持某狀態）
警方盤問那位男人時，他保持沉默。
The movie theater announced that the price of its tickets will remain unchanged. (+過去分詞，描述主詞被動承受的動作)
這間電影院宣布其電影票價將維持不變。
② maintain 常見的用途是指「維持」事物的程度或水平，或者「維護」事物使其保持良好狀態，後方接的是受詞，指明需受到維持或維護的東西為何。
The teacher came up with some rules in order to maintain order in the class.
這位老師想出一些規則來維持班級的秩序。
The workers maintain the bridge by checking it twice a year to make sure that there's no damage.
工人們一年檢查這座橋兩次，進行維護以確保橋面無損。
