2020 年 7 月,臺灣為某則好消息喝采。

In July 2020, Taiwan celebrated some positive news.

世界動物衛生組織宣佈臺灣為口蹄疫非疫區。

The World Organisation for Animal Health (世界動物衛生組織) declared Taiwan free of foot-and-mouth disease (口蹄疫).

口蹄疫對像是牛、豬和羊等動物造成健康的傷害。

This disease affects animals like cows, pigs, and sheep.

雖然口蹄疫並沒有造成許多動物死亡,但是染上口蹄疫的肉品不可以販售。

Foot-and-mouth disease doesn't kill many animals, but their meat can't be sold.

因此,許多罹患口蹄疫的動物遭到撲殺。

So, many animals that catch it are killed.

臺灣在 1997 年時爆發多起豬隻感染口蹄疫的案例。

Taiwan had many cases of foot-and-mouth disease in pigs in 1997.

從那之後,臺灣便不被允許出口豬肉,豬肉產業遭受了巨大的財務損失。

After that, Taiwan wasn't allowed to export pork. The pork industry suffered huge financial losses.

現在,臺灣已經根除口蹄疫了。

Now, Taiwan has eliminated foot-and-mouth disease.

更重要的是,我們不再需要替動物施打疫苗來保護牠們。

Most importantly, it doesn't need to give animals vaccines to protect them.

這代表臺灣的豬肉可以被銷往新興市場。

This means Taiwanese pork can be sold in new markets.

然而,在臺灣的豬隻仍然可能得到豬瘟,我們下個任務是要消除這個疾病。

However, pigs in Taiwan can still get swine fever. The next task is to eliminate this disease.
